a tree at Welbeck, 1807

It's notable that in 1807 William Cavendish-Bentinck, Duke of Portland, then prime minister, set up a Christmas tree at Welbeck Abbey, Nottinghamshire, ‘for a juvenile party’.

  1. Welbeck is an interesting house. When my Attingham class visited in 1991, the house was occupied by Lady Anne Cavendish-Bentinck and seldom viewed by the public although the military used the grounds of the estate. Now it is open to the public, I understand.
